Harter's squad

Head coach Michelle Harter discusses strategy with the Lady Spartans.

The Anderson Lady Tribe basketball team defeated the Lady Spartans 44-39 in Anderson on Saturday night.

Anderson’s Jacelyn Starks led all scorers in the tough, tightly fought contest with 17 points. The Spartans were able to control the game flow through the first half, overcoming early mistakes behind the efforts of senior Karsen Morgen, and junior Abigail Schwartz who both had 13 points on the evening.

“It was a very physical game, Spartan head coach Michelle Harter said. “The first half they had it under control. They were calling the fouls. The second half came out and they let them push us around, shove us, and foul us trying to go for shots.”

Despite the physicality of play, the Spartan defense frustrated the Lady Tribe’s efforts early, taking a 24-14 lead into halftime. The Spartans were able to maximize their opportunities in the first half, out rebounding the Lady Tribe 7-16 in the first half, and 28-17 for the game. Anderson came out in the third quarter determined to press the Spartans.

“We did some good things when we come out in that third quarter,” Harter said, “but we can't have those lapses where we forget what it is we're supposed to do. We needed to have somebody flashing in the middle. We needed to have a reversal pass and then diagonal. We didn't advance down the floor as we were dribbling the ball up. We kind of stayed in a line, so we didn't find a gap.”

The Anderson press defense was able to turn the Spartans over 11 times in the second half, often at mid court which allowed Anderson to score points in the paint.

“They did come out and pressure us,” Harter said. They sped us up. We're losing our heads there for that third quarter, and just throwing the ball around. We talked about if you get stuck, eat it rather than just throw it because then at least they have to come back against our defense. If you just turn and wing it, then that gives them a live ball turnover, and they can come down and score easily.”

The Spartans shot 58 percent from the free throw line going 7 for 12. Those 5 points proved to be the difference in the game as the Lady Spartans were unable to overcome Anderson’s physical second half effort.

"We've just got to get over that mental mindset of when teams put some full court pressure on us that we don't just throw the ball away," Harter said. "We need to relax and we find our open spots. It's hard to simulate that type of pressure in practice, but we've got to figure out a way to work on that.”

The Lady Spartan JV squad dropped their contest to Anderson earlier in the evening, falling 39-44. After playing 3 games in 8 days, the girls will get a little break for Thanksgiving. They will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Batesville.
