Bill Garrett

Bill Garrett of Shelbyville was the first black man to play basketball for Indiana University and went on to coach Crispus Attucks High School to a state championship in 1959.

BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana University Board of Trustees has approved a resolution naming the intramural center on the Bloomington campus after Bill Garrett, IU’s first black basketball player.

The center was named after Ora L. Wildermuth, a former IU trustee and judge from Lake County, Indiana, in 1971. The board approved removing Wildermuth’s name from the center in 2018 because of his opposition to racial integration and comments he made about race.
