Evelyn Phillips


Evelyn Phillips, 83, of Richmond, was called to her forever Divine Home on September 6th, 2020 in Richmond, IN. She was born on December 17th, 1936 in Sprigg, West Virginia to Della and Orville Johnson, where she was raised with four brothers and a sister in the hills of the Appalachian Mountains. She will be welcomed in Heaven by her parents; her husband, James Phillips; her brothers, Arlon and Willis Johnson, and her sister, Parlee Barker.

James and Evelyn raised their five children together, starting their family in Sprigg, West Virginia, where they met while “Jimmy” was in the service. Their children all carry on Evelyn’s love for family with their own children and significant others.

Diana (Gerald) Smith, of Richmond, Debra (Tom) Adams, of Richmond, Randy Phillips, of Richmond, Barbara (Tony) Williams, of Brownsville, and Greg (Devetta) Phillips, of Richmond, along with nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Evelyn leaves behind many family members across Kentucky, West Virginia, and Florida. Her friends, Ron Barker and Virginia Moore also brought true friendship and joy to her life; the family thanks them for giving her the gift of friendship.

Throughout her life, church was her livelihood. She attended Bethel Apostolic Church for over 45 years in Connersville, IN, with her brother as her preacher, Reverend Tom Johnson. She had much appreciation for the close community at church, as she daily gave her life to the Lord regardless of where she was. Somedays, the Lord takes shining lights and gives them a forever home, Evelyn dreamt of this Divine Home and the reunification with her husband, Jimmy. Evelyn Phillips was that bright golden light for so many in our family. Her golden smile and golden heart live on through her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.

Visitation for Evelyn will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Connersville. The funeral service will begin at 1:00pm, at the funeral home, with Brother Buie officiating. Burial will follow in Elkhorn Cemetery.
