Mayor Chad Frank would like the community to stand behind Connersville High School wrestler Evan Shafer Friday. The mayor pointed out that Shafer has gone above and beyond this year to become the top wrestler.
So far, he hasn’t disappointed, building a 37-0 record on the way to the state finals.
“As a community, we need to support him. This Friday is ‘Spartan Friday.’ We hope everyone will decorate their offices out in red and white to show their support," Frank said. "Shafer has worked so hard to get here, this is an incredible accomplishment.
“What he has accomplished as a wrestler is very, very difficult. If he wins Friday, he will go Saturday for three matches. In the world of wrestling that is tough, it is hard on your body."
The Mayor has created a video that can be seen on the City of Connersville Facebook Page, supporting the athlete.
"We just really want to support him right now, he is 37-0," Frank said. "We hope all our businesses will support him and show we care. Get your Spartan gear out and wear it Friday.
"Everyone in town needs to help show him support. This is a big deal.”
Shafer, a senior at CHS wasn’t predicted to win the Indiana high school athletic association semi-state wrestling tournament in the heavyweight division but he proved many wrong.
Shafer is undefeated, something CHS hasn’t seen in some time.
The Connersville heavyweight will compete in the first round of the IHSAA state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Friday.
Attendance is limited but tickets are on sale now through the IHSAA website.
