Author to sign books Saturday

A history professor at the University of Detroit Mercy is coming to Connersville this week for a book signing and an appearance at a local literary club.

Dr. Gregory D. Sumner has written several books of history and will be signing his newest, Michigan POW Camps in WWII, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Brian’s Bistro and More, 408 Central Ave., from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The public is invited.

According to Amazon.com, during World War II, “Michigan became a temporary home to six thousand German and Italian POWs. At a time of homefront labor shortages, they picked fruit in Berrien County, harvested sugar beets in the Thumb, cut pulpwood in the Upper Peninsula and maintained parks and other public spaces in Detroit.” Sumner’s book profiles the work programs and the POW experience.

Sumner will be meeting with ADOU, the A Dozen of Us literary club, at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Billie Bertch. Sumner and Bertch’s husband, Jim Bertch, were college friends.

Sumner’s previous books include Dwight MacDonald and the Politics Circle, Unstuck in Time: A Journey Through Kurt Vonnegut’s Life and Novels, and Detroit in World War II.
