Connersville Parks Dept. announces sign-up dates

The Connersville Parks and Recreation Department has released a schedule of sign-up deadlines and fees for its sports programs.

n Boys basketball; grades 1-6, $25 per child, deadline Dec. 6.

n Mixed league volleyball: ages 16-up, $150 per team, deadline Dec. 13.

n Church league basketball: ages 16-up, $175 per team, deadline is Dec. 13.

n Indoor youth soccer: grades 3-5 and 6-8, $25 per child, deadline is Dec. 27.

People can register for any of the programs at the John H. Miller Community Center in Roberts Park, 2900 Park Road.

The Parks Department office is open 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 12:30 - 4 p.m. For information, call 765-825-5244.

Columbus Day Open golf tournament

Registrations are now being taken for the Columbus Day Open golf tournament, which will be held at the Liberty Country Club on Monday at 11 a.m.

The scramble format event is held each year to help sponsor Christmas gifts for children in the Union County area.

There is no prize money, but instead prizes will be awarded, including the Four Ugly Medals to the winning team. Cost for the event is $35 per person, and each participant will receive 18 holes of golfing and a lunch.

Middle School boys basketball tryouts

Connersville Middle School will be holding boys basketball tryouts on Thursday and on Oct. 15.

On Thursday, tryouts will be held inside Spartan Bowl for seventh-graders at 6-7:30 p.m. The Bowl will then be the site for eigth-graders from 7:30-9 p.m.

On Oct. 15, tryouts will be held in the Spartan Arena from 4-6 p.m. (seventh-graders), and from 6-8 p.m. (eighth-graders).

Students must have a completed physical on file in the CMS office, and all forms must be signed to be eligible. Students will receive a red card, which they will take to tryouts.

Cardinals, Braves heading to Game 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina pushed the St. Louis Cardinals to a deciding Game 5 of the NL Division Series, poking a tying single in the eighth inning and lifting a sacrifice fly in the 10th to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Monday.

Molina slung his bat far into the outfield after his winner, and the crowd at Busch Stadium roared.

Game 5 will be Wednesday back in Atlanta. The Cardinals will have ace Jack Flaherty on the mound, and the Braves will go with Mike Foltynewicz.
