INDIANAPOLIS — Saturday’s outcome in the first game of the Southeastern Showdown was not what the Connersville Spartans envisioned when they boarded the bus bound for Indianapolis.

It didn’t come close.

Greensburg quarterback Toby Brogan scored four touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a 42-0 shutout win over CHS in the first of four games played inside Lucas Oil Stadium.

Brogan closed the first quarter with a three-yard scamper, giving the visiting team a 7-0 lead.

By halftime, the junior signal caller had added end zone runs of 4, 21 and 9 yards to push that advantage to 26-0.

His final score in the half occurred with 33 seconds left before the break. It was the third time this season that Connersville had surrendered a touchdown in the final minute of the first half.

“We played well at times but for the most part it was a repeat of week one and week two,” Connersville head coach Adam Kelly said afterward. “Throughout the game, we would take one step forward and then go two steps backward.”

Connersville’s best drive in the game was its first, when the Spartans took the opening kickoff and moved to the GHS 38-yard-line in 13 plays before the drive stalled on an incomplete pass on fourth down.

CHS failed to cross midfield again throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Spartans came close to the midfield stripe on several instances, but three turnovers -- an interception and two fumbles -- left them short of that mark.

“We have identified some things that we can focus on to help us be successful,” Kelly said. “It’s not a scheme or effort issue, there are just some things that we need to approach differently.

“I like the kids, I like the team and I like the system that we have in place. Right now, it’s just a consistency thing.”

Confidence coming into the game was not an issue for Kelly or his charges. Far from it, in fact.

“We had a lot of success in our summer scrimmage against them, so the kids really thought they would do well in this game,” the CHS mentor said.

But by the end of the third quarter, the score was 39-0 and the game was put on a running clock.

CHS would get only one full possession in the final frame but a fumble after five plays put an end to that, and left the Spartans scoreless at the final buzzer.

Quarterback Adam Kelly Jr. led the Connersville running attack, finishing with 50 yards. Landon Cerqua was next with 44 yards, followed by Gavin Lynch with 25.

Brogan led Greensburg with 116 yards on 11 carries. He finished with 111 passing yards.

“We are at a point in which we just need to believe in ourselves,” coach Kelly said. “That is our job as a coaching staff to get the kids to do that. I believe that once we get the kids to adopt that belief, we’re going to be a good football team.”

Connersville travels to South Dearborn this Friday.
