ATTRACTIONS

Art gallery: Whitewater Valley Arts Association, 402 Central Ave., open Thursdays and Fridays 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. except when exhibits are being changed. Open if the flag is out and on other occasions by request.

Hiking trail: Whitewater Canal Trail, trailhead east of Metamora along U.S. 52. Connects Metamora and Brookville along the old Whitewater Canal path, with plans for lengthening. www.whitewatercanaltrail.com

Historic house: Elmhurst, the Little White House, circa 1831, 779 S. State Road 121. Tours by appointment. 765-825-5365.

Historic building: Canal House, 111 W. 4th St. Built as headquarters for Whitewater Canal. Restored by Historic Connersville. Open by appointment, 765-265-5926.

Historic village: Metamora, along U.S. 52 west of Brookville. 1830-era town and state historic site with restored canal and aqueduct, canal boat rides, working water-powered grist mill, several shops. Canal Days festival over Labor Day draws thousands; several other festivals and music events at other times. metamoraindiana.com/

Nature: Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary: 3499 S. Bird Sanctuary Road, 765-827-5109, indianaaudubon.org/mgbs/

Nature: Shrader-Weaver Nature Preserve, County Roads 450W and 650N. Hiking trails, some virgin forest.

Recreation: Public canoe, kayak launch, west of Duke Energy off Veterans Memorial Drive.
