How to enjoy a beautiful day

Bicycles line buildings in the 400 block of Central Avenue as a group of cyclists from Oxford, Ohio, take a break for lunch on Wedneday. Locking up their steeds are Marilyn Collins, left, and Bill Scott, who has been riding for about 40 years.

Graying hair may symbolize advancing age but it doesn’t have to stop people from being out enjoying the countryside on a beautiful day.

That’s why a gang of cyclists descended on Connersville Wednesday. At about noon, having crossed the 5th Street bridge and made it through the busy traffic on the east edge of town, they parked their wheeled steeds at Brian’s Bistro & More in teh 400 block of Central Avenue and went inside for lunch before heading back to their start at Oxford, Ohio.

“The roads are beautiful and the farms, oh my gosh,” Laura Cohen said as she stepped off of her bike and unsnapped her helmet.

She and eight others rode the 54 miles here, starting at 9 a.m. It’s an informal group of friends that goes cycling every Saturday. During summer, they add midweek adventures like Wednesday’s. They like to come over to Connersville at least once a year.

“It keeps us out of trouble,” said Ellen Ford McCune of Oxford, a Connersville High School graduate whose family lived on the west side of town. “I justs found my high school yearbook from 1974,” she said, talking about the collection of Cohiscans available at Brian’s.

The group is building up for a long ride at the end of September. Before that ride they will be pedalling 55 miles from Oxford to Eaton, in Ohio, and then to Carillion Park in Dayton, 60 miles. The capstone will be riding 80 miles on the Loveland Trail from Oxford to Yellow Springs.

Bill Scott, who has been riding with various cycling groups for about 40 years, said riding is helpful. “It keeps you healthy and it’s non-impact (exercise) which is good for the joints, and you meet a lot of nice people.”

He paused for a few seconds and added, “And you get to spend a lot of money on toys. If you’re a male, that’s important.”
