Chicken dinner will help community center

By KATE THURSTON - kthurston@newsexaminer.com

Eighteen hundred pieces of chicken will be fried Saturday at the 16th Annual Columbia Chicken Dinner.

“It is our biggest fundraiser we hold every year,” Terena Murray, Columbia Community Center board president, said. “It is always the Saturday after Labor Day and we have anywhere between 500 to 600 people attend and last year we sold 468 meals.

Last year the dinner sold over 1,300 pieces of chicken.

“This year we are frying 1,800 pieces because we ran out last year.”

It takes the entire community to help put the event together and people are always happy to help, Murray said.

“Everyone volunteers their time. It is amazing how many people help with this event. I am amazed at the people who are helping. They are volunteering their Saturday to help and it means a lot to all of us.”

Every penny goes right back into the building to pay the bills.

“For 16 years, this dinner has been the fundraiser to pay the bills.”

Since Murray became president, she has been trying other fundraisers throughout the year to raise extra money for repairs.

“The Columbia Township Community Center is the only original school house left in Fayette County. This building has been at the core of the Columbia community since the pioneer days. We want to keep up on the maintenance, repairs and grounds. The building means a lot to us.”

The dinner will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

“I think the weather is going to be great, knock on wood,” she laughed. “I think we will have a great turnout.”

There will be live music, a gun raffle, gift baskets, 50/50 drawing, 2020 family pass to Roberts Park pool, Showtime Cinema gift card and many more items. For information, call 765-265-9779.
