Some students were bright eyed and bushy-tailed, others sluggish and moaning about the first day of school on Wednesday.

School is back in session and not only students had to prepare but staff did as well.

“First day is all about getting to know the kids and building relationships,” Eastview Elementary School Principal James Small said. “I always tell my teachers to teach their best lesson on the first day because you don’t always a second chance to make that first impression. We also thoroughly cover and teach procedures and will continue through the year. Myself, I go to each classroom and go over expectations and get to know the kids better. The first day is about having fun and getting the kids excited about the school year.”

Zeke Caylor, a fourth grader at Eastview Elementary, just moved from Brookville and on his first day said, “I am tired but I do look forward to math.”

Annabella Farmer, a first grader at Eastview, said she felt good about her first day and was excited to go to school. Her brother, Owen Ausmus, a fourth grader, was looking forward to doing science and said he felt good about the day.

Superintendent Scott Collins visited the schools on opening day.

“As far as the start of the school year, I have been visiting buildings all day and we have had smooth starts at all of the buildings where I have visited,” Collins said Wednesday morning. “There is a lot of positive energy and excitement with the start of the year. I have checked in on many of our new teachers and they were all doing well and several commented on the great support they have had from their principals and fellow teachers with great support.”
