Health-ier Community Day planned at Roberts Park

By KATE THURSTON - kthurston@newsexaminer.com

Face painting, rock climbing and many other activities – including free swimming at the Roberts Park Pool – are planned for the Reid Health-ier Community Day on Saturday.

The first Reid Health-ier Community Day will be from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 10, at Roberts Park.

The event is meant to promote healthy choices and share services available from the Reid Health to improve community health and just have some fun, Billie Kester, Reid Health vice president/continuum of care, said.

All activities are free.

More than 50 Reid team members will be on hand to lead activities that include a 3K Family Friendly Color Run, fitness classes led by HealthWorks instructors, rock climbing wall, face painting, a strong-man competition, scavenger hunt and inflatables. They also will share information about Reid Health screenings.

Registration for the color run will open at 8 a.m. The first 500 registrants will get a free T-shirt and sunglasses.

Healthy snacks and prizes will be available, along with booths with information about services.

Park Superintendent Katherine Good is pleased to have Reid hosting a community activity at Roberts Park.

“Everyone at the park is thrilled to help welcome Reid Health to our community. Saturday is going to be so much fun with all the activities that they have planned, plus a free day at the pool will be wonderful!” Good said. “We have already begun partnership with Reid Health rebuilding the tennis courts and we hope to begin to show our appreciation by making Saturday the best it can be.”

In conjunction with the event, Reid is sponsoring Family Day at the Roberts Park Pool with free admission from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a free beach towel to the first 250 swimmers.

“As part of our continued efforts in the region to provide resources that encourage and promote wellness, we hope this event encourages community members to join us in a day full of physical activity appropriate for all ages and abilities,” Kester said.

Ribbon-cutting set

Prior to the start of Reid Health-ier Community Day, the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce will formally celebrate Reid Health's purchase of Fayette Regional Health System with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. in Roberts Park. Joining the Chamber Diplomats and board will be Mayor Harold Gordon.
