Summer meal program on track

By LEANA CHOATE - lchoate@newsexaminer.com

Kids Stop Cafe summer meal program is feeding about the same number of children per day as it did in 2018.

The Kids Stop Cafe is a school bus turned mobile cafeteria that provides free meals to any child under the age of 18. The Fayette County School Corporation food service operates the bus, taking meals out to several locations on weekdays.

Last year, the summer meal program fed about 43 kids per day, said FCSC food service director Rachel O’Brien.

“We were averaging 43 per day, this year for June we averaged 39 per day. They are still lower than I would like.”

O’Brien said the heat and rain determine how many kids come out and how well the summer meal program does each day.

“I feel like there are more needs that could be met by kids coming to the bus; once a month we hand out Gleaner’s grocery bags, we advertise the date on Channel 3 and the radio. I am not really sure why we have not had more come out,” said O’Brien.

The Kids Stop Cafe also provides free meals to the children at Summer Discovery, a child day camp in Roberts Park. “They are averaging 42 (meals) per day this year, last year they were at 37.”

To help reach more children, the Kids Stop Cafe added The Ha*ven, in the Frazee Community Center at 901 Meyer Ave., as a mobile site.
