Baby contest to take place Aug. 1

By LEANA CHOATE - lchoate@newsexaminer.com

It’s almost time to crown at Prince and Prince in the Fayette County Fair Baby Contest Prince and Princess.

For the first time, Voices for Social and Cultural Life, a group operating under Fayette County Community Voices, is hosting the Fayette County Baby Fair contest on Thursday, Aug. 1, in the John H. Miller Community Center.

Kathleen Jasper, Social and Cultural Life chair, said every baby entered in the contest will receive a gift bag.

“Everything is going to be baby related,” Jasper said. “I’m looking at high chairs or that step-up car seat that they (the baby) have to have.”

Participants should be dressed in a theme. This year’s theme is fairy tale characters, Jasper said.

“Our judges are all from out of town. The judges have a scoring card where they score how they feel each baby rated in their category,” Jasper said. “On how they dressed according to the theme.”

Babies born after Aug. 1, 2018, may be entered. Registration will be July 24-30 at the fair board office in Roberts Park. The registration fee is $5. Admission to the contest is $1.

For the first time, there will be a baby vendor fair on the day of the baby contest. Everything sold will benefit babies, mothers and the family. The vendor fair will be from 2-7 p.m. in the Miller building ball room.

“I have a lady coming from Tennessee to sell handmade wooden cradles,” Jasper said. “Everything will be centered around baby items.”

The public may attend the baby vendor fair, even if they are not there for the baby contest, Jasper said.

Social and Cultural Life is still looking for sponsors and a photographer for the contest. Those willing to be a part of the event may contact Jasper at mkmccallj@gmail.com.
