Some children this summer are spending their time giving back to those in the community who need a little extra help.

The children in the summer day camp, Summer Discovery, have launched a canned food drive. That and other activities have been named Discovery Gives Back to the Community.

“The kids are going home and asking their neighbors to donate and then the kids are bringing canned goods back in for a weekly competition of what grades can bring in the most,” Karie Lewis, one of the directors at Summer Discovery, said.

Once the children collect enough canned foods, they will go with counselors to put the canned goods into the red blessing boxes around the community.

“The kids are setting personal goals on how many they are going to bring in,” Lewis said. “Kids then, in return, are receiving fun little rewards for doing their part.”

The children are happy and excited to be doing their part, Lewis said.

“We are going to be feeding the hungry people and I can help do that. It is good to help people and that is what I want to do,” Savannah Shubert, a child at the day camp, said.

Anyone can bring canned food to the John H. Miller Community Center in Roberts Park, 2900 Park Road, during between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Summer Discovery has more activities planned for the kids this summer.

“We are also going to be taking them (the children) to Hickory Creek nursing home on a weekly basis to go play bingo with the residents,” Lewis said.
