D-Day remembered

U.S. Army troops carried out the largest ever sea-based invasion 75 years ago today, on June 6, 1944. Pictured are American soldiers wading ashore from a plywood “Higgins boat” as German machine guns and artillery bear down on them from positions along the shore. Much of the free world is remembering the sacrifices of the service men who died or were wounded that day. The invasion bythe U.S. led the Allied forces to victory, first inEurope 11 months later and then over Japan. A special presentation about the battle and remembrances of it is on Page A5 today.
