Voices group wants to hear from the public

By LEANA CHOATE - lchoate@newsexaminer.com

To improve a community, the community must know what to do to make those improvements and what those improvements are, according to the leader of a group working within Fayette County Community Voices.

Many attempts have been made to improve the Fayette County community, Linda Fitzgerald, administrator of the Social and Culture group, said.

“Things don’t get done around here,” Fitzgerald said. “There is a lack of working together to get things done and that’s why things don’t change.”

The Social and Culture Life capital group formed under the umbrella of Fayette County Community Voices to bring together the community to develop and execute projects and events to improve the quality of life for everyone.

The group is hosting a Meet Us at the Bistro event on June 4 to bring people of the community together to have their voices heard.

“We want people to tell us their ideas, concerns, you know let us hear you,” Fitzgerald said. “Many members of the community still have the idea that a big manufacturing company will come in and pick the town back up. But we need to give up the idea of manufacturing. We’re a small town. We need to embrace the idea of our small town charm, and come up with ways to provide for our community without losing that small town charm.”

The event will introduce Fayette County Community Voices and the groups that operate under it. This is meant to give the members of the community an idea of what these groups offer and what projects they can help with to make positive changes to the community.

“We will meet at the Bistro along with members of the community and listen to their concerns and ideas, and work with them to do these things,” Kathleen Jasper, a chair of the Social Cultural group said. “We will have accountability sessions so these things will get done, because so many things don’t get done.”

The free event will take place 5:30-7 p.m Tuesday, June 4 at Brian’s Bistro and More, 408 Central Ave. Jasper and Fitzgerald said space is very limited, and reservations are a must. Email Jasper at kathjasper@gmail.com or call her at 865-770-0785.

“This is going to be fun, exciting and energetic,” Fitzgerald said.
