Asbestos found in Milton School

By DARRELL SMITH - dsmith@newsexaminer.com

MILTON — The cost to raze the old Milton School has gone up due to more asbestos being found.

Demolition of the structure that began last month should be completed by the end of next week, according to Clerk-Treasurer Terry Craig. The contractors found more asbestos in the building that had not previously been sealed.

That will cost $35,000 more to remove, Craig said. All but about $5,000 will be available because bid for demolition came in lower than the state Office of Community and Rural Affairs grant to fund the removal of the building.

The Council will seek additional funding from OCRA to complete the task.

The Council hired RQAW Engineers, the engineers for the demolition, to do some additional work for the town. The engineers will do an asset inventory in hopes of receiving a Community Crossroads grant for paving from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The Council also approved purchasing banners and brackets for the 27 streetlight poles along Indiana 1.
