County at No. 10 in unemployment


Fayette County moved down the list of Indiana counties with the highest unemployment but still ranked 10th in January.

Released Tuesday, the latest figures from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show the county with 5.3 percent of the workforce unemployed. Vermillion County, in west-central Indiana, ranked as the state’s highest, with 6.8 percent unemployed.

The overall state unemployment rate came in at 3.5 percent, lower than the national rate of 4.0 percent.

For December, the state counted 9,311 people in Fayette County’s workforce, with 8,813 working.

The county’s December unemployment rate came in at 4.7 percent, ranking fifth-highest of Indiana’s 92 counties. In November, the county ranked fifth with 4.9 percent unemployment. In December 2017, the county recorded 4.2 percent unemployment.
