CHS getting fitness room for staff

By LEANA CHOATE - lchoate@newsexaminer.com

A fitness room for faculty and staff is being put in at Connersville High School to improve mental and physical wellness.

An old room at CHS is being renovated into a fitness room primarily for the staff to use, Kelli House, the school’s physical education and health department and wellness coordinator, said.

“We really want to create a safe, non-judgmental wellness space for our staff,” House said.

The space will have workout machines, dumbbells of different weights and mats for yoga. Next year, House hopes to have yoga instructors come and teach classes for the staff.

House and Stephanie Smith, CHS family and consumer science teacher, came up with the idea of the wellness space. They are both members of the wellness committee and are strong advocates for health and wellness.

“The stress level for some staff here at the school is high,” House said. “The fitness room will allow staff to come after school to relieve some stress and to just have a mind outlet.”

Smith said not a lot of staff members at the school have the time or money to go to the gym, so many don’t.

“Teachers and staff just don’t have the time outside of school to travel to a gym,” Smith said. “Kelli and I realized that we needed to do something that will always be available to the staff and that we can evolve over time. We really hope it benefits our staff in healthy ways.”

The fitness room will be free to the staff.

A wellness grant allowed for House and Smith to purchase some start-up equipment. Other equipment has been brought in because of donations, or is equipment no longer used by the school’s physical education classes.

The fitness room is still short on equipment and other necessities, such as towels, cleaning supplies and laundry hampers. Smith and House said they are open to any donations that could go to use in the fitness room.

To donate, send House an email at khouse@fayette.k12.in.us, or Smith at ssmith@fayette.k12.in.us.
