Utilities, union reach agreement

By DARRELL SMITH - dsmith@newsexaminer.com

A memorandum of understanding with the union representing workers at the wastewater treatment plant has been approved.

Connersville Utilities Director Mike Bottomley told the Board of Public Works and Safety that the department has only two people at the plant on Mondays and Tuesdays. If one of those is off, the maintenance employee has covered the shift. The union complained a plant employee was not receiving overtime as a result.

“We agreed we would not do that anymore but we also still have the right to transfer an employee if one of their people is off more than seven days,” he said.

The person that would have been called in for overtime, the utility has agreed to pay her the eight hours, he added.

The Board of Works approved that as a memorandum of understanding on Monday.

Bottomley announced a public meeting about the upcoming drainage improvement project in the Major Drive and Deer Trail area to fix standing water behind those residences. The meeting will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the ttilities office, 216 Vine St. A contractor has been hired to complete the project when weather permits.
