Connersville Middle School red sweeps SD

Both Connersville Middle School boys red teams were in action on Tuesday, hosting South Dearborn inside the Spartan Arena.

In the eighth-grade contest, the Spartans pounced on the Knights quickly, racing out to an 18-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. That was more than enough to propel the eight unit to a 55-28 victory.

James Williams provided CMS with the early spark, scoring 10 points in the opening frame.

South Dearborn attempted to get back in the game from the 3-point line, as the Knights hit eight shots from distance, but it could not overcome 70 percent shooting from the Spartans inside the arc,

Lucas Barron paced Connersville with 21 points, followed by James Williams with 12 and Josh Williams with nine. Braxton Myers scored six, and the duo of Aden Toles and Cooper Kinney chipped in a total of seven points.

In the seventh-grade contest, Brady Cloyd provided nine first-quarter points to direct the Spartans early on. This game was more of a battle, however, as the Knights trailed by only one (11-10) after one, and actually led by a point at halftime (17-16).

The two teams continued to go back-and-forth in the second half, but in the end it was CMS on top, 31-26.

“Connersville might have been able to pull away sooner, but couldn’t seem to hang onto the ball, turning it over 18 times on the night,” CMS coach Brian Munchel said. “We have got to do a better job taking care of the ball throughout the game.

“I’m really proud of how our guys stepped up defensively to pull out a gutsy win tonight.”

Brady Cloyd led the way for Connersville with 14 points. Mason Back and Blaine Hornsby added seven and six, respectively. Trot Davidson and Deante Smith both added a basket.
