CHS swimmers bring home 2nd and 3rd from EIAC meet

By GRADY TATE - gtate@newsexaminer.com

AURORA — Both Connersville swim teams traveled to South Dearborn High School for the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference swim meet on Saturday, expecting to face some stiff competition.

As a result, they weren’t surprised by some of the results they encountered in the pool.

Greensburg won the girls portion of the meet, finishing 36 points ahead of runner-up East Central, two teams the Lady Spartans knew were capable of winning the meet.

Connersville was third with 228 points, the Spartans girls finishing ahead of Batesville, Lawrenceburg and host South Dearborn.

In the boys meet, East Central was the top team, the Trojans scoring 384 points to easily outdistance the runner-up Spartans, who checked out with 221 points. Greensburg was third with 205 points, followed by Lawrenceburg, Batesville and South Dearborn.

Individually, the Spartans finished with three conference champions, two of them coming from the same event.

Audra Volz finished her 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:10.92, finishing well ahead of Batesville’s Allison Storms, who touched the wall at the 1:14.14 mark.

For Volz, a senior, the swim was her last at an EIAC meet.

Following that swim, the boys hit the water for the same event, and Skyler Cavins finished his race in a time of 1:07.26. That was quick enough to beat Batesville’s Ben Moster, who finished in a time of 1:10.42.

Cavins is a freshman, meaning he will have the chance to defend his title in years to come.

Cavins also added a runner-up finish in the 200 IM, finishing in a time of 2:14.17.

The third conference champion not only won his second straight EIAC crown, but did so in record-breaking fashion.

Quinton Jones had little trouble winning the boys diving competition, finishing with 416.2 points, the sophomore beating the Connersville High School record that he set as a freshman last season.

Finishing third at the meet was the girls 200 medley relay team, the foursome consisting of Maria Wells, Grace Newman, Ryleigh Loper and Volz. The touched the wall in a time of 2:02.28.

Those same four girls also finished third in the 200 freestyle relay event.

Loper was also a third-place finisher in the 200 freestyle event, earning a time of 2:13.50.

The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Kyle Downard, Hutton Getz, Justin Kidd and Cavins was third-best at the meet with a time of 1:41.26. Joining Cavins, Getz and Kidd for third in the 400 freestyle relay was Spencer Noah. They finished with a time of 3:54.46.

Individually, Getz wound up third in the 100 backstroke (1:05.93).

Both teams are in action tonight against East Central.
