Woman dies in Union County crash

LIBERTY — An accident in Union County caused by the icy conditions on Wednesday resulted in the death of a Connersville woman. 

Carrie A. Carter, 44, of Connersville, was a backseat passenger in an Indy Airport Taxi Dodge van at the time of the accident and died as a result of her injuries.

Indiana State Police investigators said the van had been traveling in the eastbound lane of Indiana 44 near Hoffman Road west of Liberty about 6:30 a.m. The driver, Aderaw Adugna Workie of Indianapolis, lost control on the icy road. The van crossed the center line, resulting in a head-on collision with the westbound, state-owned Ford Expedition driven by State Fire Marshal Ross Keasling of Liberty.

Neither driver received injuries. It is unknown if Carter wore a safety belt at the time of the crash. The investigation will continue.

The crash closed Indiana 44 for nearly four hours while officers cleared the scene and did their investigation.

Union County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrived at the scene and called for assistance from ISP. Trooper Aaron Edwards and Crash Reconstruction Investigators Trooper Scott Keegan and Trooper Coley McCutcheon arrived and investigated the accident. ISP Sgt. Brian Metcalfe and Troopers Dan Jones, Scott McPheeters and Eric Thumb as well as Investigator Andrew Wandersee, Liberty Police Department and Liberty Fire Department assisted at the scene.
