When children are placed in a situation where the parents have been in an accident, hurt or even arrested, something soft to cuddle may go a long way to easing the trauma they may feel.

Central Christian Church and New Hope Tabernacle are trying to ease that sense of trauma by providing Connersville Police Department officers with teddy bears to give children in those situations.

Shari Phegley from the church said the members were asked to bring in teddy bears or stuffed animals to give to the police. The members responded in a big way.

She presented CPD Officer Joe Becker with about 50 of the bears and stuffed animals to distribute to other officers to carry in their cars to give to children as needed.

Sometimes the officers get into a situation where the children are scared of the police.

“Sometimes mommy and daddy told them the police will arrest them if they’re not good,” Becker said. “Please stop telling your children that. We should be the first person they run to, not from.”

“We did this in October. Nancy Gilmore, 94, brought the last bag in,” Phegley said. “Hopefully this will help that situation. We appreciate everything you do.”
