Charles Edward Hughes

Charles Edward Hughes, 95, of Connersville, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Fayette Regional Health. He was born May 29, 1923, in Connersville, to the late Fritz and Neta Garrison Hughes.

He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1941 and went on to Penn State University. He enlisted with the Army Air Corps and served during WWII as a gunner SGT on a B25. He was recalled for the Korean War in 1950. In October 2014, he was able to participate in the Honor Flight to recognize his service in WWII.

Charles retired from Stant Mfg. after 61 years. He was a past president for the Historic Connersville Blue and Gray Civil War Round Table, and he also belonged to the Indianapolis Civil War Round Table, Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War, American Legion, VFW, and Amvets. He was also a member and past president of Kiwanis. He served on the City Cemetery Board for 32 years; putting flags on veterans’ graves every year. In 2014, he was honored with a bench in the city cemetery for his efforts to maintain veterans’ graves for 30 years. Charles was a member of Historic Connersville and enjoyed sharing Connersville history with anyone who would listen. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2015. He was a member of the Fayette County Genealogy Association and the Indiana Historical Society. He also served as Connersville Township Constable for 28 years.

He married Halaweis Brown Hughes in 1951 and she passed away on December 12, 2003. They were able to enjoy 52 years together.

Charles is survived by several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Kim Duff, of Connersville.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Russell, Bob, Howard, and George Hughes; a sister, Susie Hughes; a sister-in-law, Wuanita Hughes, and a nephew, Melvin Hughes.

Visitation for Charles will be on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 3:00pm until 6:00pm at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Connersville. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am on Saturday, October 20, at the funeral home, with Reverend Jim Orr, officiating. Burial with graveside military honors presented by the Fayette County Honor Guard will follow in Dale Cemetery.
