Lady Wildcat golfers nipped in first dual of season

BROOKVILLE — Hosting the Richmond Red Devils at Brook Hill Golf Club in its first dual of the season, the Franklin County girls golf team fell just short by a 161-165 score on Monday evening.

Three players, Abby Orschell, Maggie Brack and Camryn Brewer all shot team-low scores of 41 on the home course, but the team effort still fell four strokes short.

“We played a very tough Richmond squad tonight,” Franklin County head coach Marisa Mears said afterward. “We fought them hard and ended up losing by those four shots.”

In spite of the loss, Mears was inspired by the effort from her charges.

“All the girls are really hitting the ball well right now,” she said. “Every stroke counts against good teams like Richmond and I feel our short game once again let us down.

“I’m proud of the score we finished with tonight, and I know we will keep working hard to improve.”

Also posting scores for FC on the night were Gracie Graf (42) and Ashlan Hill (44).

For the junior varsity unit, scorers by the Wildcats included Taylor McCreary (54), Erin Hesselbrock (54), Sam Ebrens (59) and Kelsie Brackney (64).

The loss comes on the heels of a third-place finish at the Greensburg Invitational, played on Saturday.

Richmond won that meet as well, the Lady Devils finishing with a team score of 333. Host Greensburg was second at 336. Franklin County was next at 370, followed by Mooresville (383), Greenfield-Central (387), Batesville (391), Triton Central (401), Indian Creek (404), Jennings County (412), Shelbyville (413), East Central (416), Franklin Central (422), Hagerstown (438) and Rushville (447).

Individually, the Lady Cats got scores from Orschell (84), Brack (88), Graf (92), Brewer (106) and Hill (108). The scores by Orschell and Graf were personal bests.
