Merl A Gentry

Merl A Gentry, 88, passed away peacefully August 2, 2018, at Whitewater Commons in Liberty.

Merl was born to James and Lora (Wright) Gentry in Franklin County on October 19, 1929. He was raised in Laurel, Indiana, by his grandparents, Thomas and Mattie Wright. He graduated from Laurel High School.

During the Korean War, Merl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was a very proud veteran. His motto was “Once a Marine – Always a Marine.” He had various jobs throughout his life until he found his true passion working as property manager at Whitewater Memorial State Park, a position he held for 30 years.

He married Patricia Hart Bourne on June 9, 1990. Together they enjoyed traveling, family dinners, and camping with friends. For more than 18 years, Merl was very active in the Liberty Lions Club. He also served on the Union County Parks Board for 22 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 122 and the Whitewater Valley Marine Corps League.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Patricia Gentry; daughter, Michelle (Steve) Carter; stepson, Keith Bourne; stepdaughters, Leah (John) Krickenbarger and Krista (Tom) Carr; grandchildren, Jason (Shola) Carter, Anita (Brian) Dannaker; step grandchildren, Wesley Bourne, Shane (Anne) Krickenbarger, Shawna (Chris) Nuse, Jessika Wicker, Zakaria Gabbard and Leah Gabbard; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Lochlan Dannaker, Willow Krickenbarger, Katie and Austin Puckett, Breyden, Mason, Coleton, Callie Wicker, Saigelynn Nuse and Allie Caswell; and his pet chihuahua, Lola.

A memorial service will be held at the Whitewater Memorial State Park beach on August 9 at 1:00 PM. Reception will follow at Edwards Memorial Methodist Church fellowship hall in Liberty. In case of rain, the alternate site for the memorial service will be at Edwards Memorial Methodist Church. Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home, Connersville has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Union County Cancer Association, PO Box 294, Liberty, IN 47353; Liberty Acres United Rescue, 3546 E Mitchell Road, Liberty, IN 47353; or Union County Adopt-a-Dog, PO Box 376, Liberty, IN 47353.
