Community Youth Day promises fun, concert

By BRANDON TOWNSEND - btownsend@newsexaminer.com

Children and their parents or guardians will be able to spend a day of entertainment and excitement together at Roberts Park on Thursday.

The 4th annual Community Youth Day, presented by the Fayette County Public Library, will include a fun fair at the John H. Miller Community Center in the park. The evening event, a family concert, will take place at the Roberts Park Amphitheater.

At last year’s Youth Day, 500 to 600 children were in attendance, according to Melissa Scott, assistant library director.

“Youth Day is designed to provide a free event for kids to celebrate who they are,” said Scott. “It’s all about the kids that day.”

Free concessions, including walking tacos, popcorn, cotton candy, and snowcones, will be served. No fee is required to attend the daytime or evening event. Children of all ages are welcome, but must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.

The Fun Fair is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both inside and in the area surrounding the Miller Center with games and activities for children to play together. Firetrucks and police cars will be in the “Touch-A-Vehicle” area and there will be a game truck for kids to sit in and play video games.

Presenters from the Newport Aquarium will be at the Fun Fair to put on three penguin shows with penguins from the aquarium.

The evening concert was originally supposed to feature a performance by country music artist Allie Colleen, the daughter of country icon Garth Brooks, but Colleen cancelled. Instead, there will be performances by nationally recognized recording artists Lee Gantt and Sarah Spicer.

Gantt is a country artist who has opened for some of the biggest names in country music such as Chris Young, Dustin Lynch and Thompson Square. Spicer is a New Zealand-born blues rock artist who was a finalist on the New Zealand’s The X Factor. She also opened for Michael Bolton at his debut New Zealand concert in 2015.

The concert will begin at 6 p.m. at the amphitheater and is open to the public.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Scott. “Everybody has fun from the sponsors, to the kids, to the parents and grandparents that attend.”

Sponsors for the event include Fayette Regional Health System, Union Savings and Loan Association, Meridian Health Services and Whitewater Career Center, among others.
