Delayed ... gratification or disappointment?

BROOKVILLE — Thunder storms and rain have had their way with spring sport schedules throughout the past two months, sending athletic directors scrambling to find open dates to re-schedule postponed events.

Why should the postseason be any different?

Monday ushered in the opening round of the Class 3A Sectional 29 softball tournament, played at Franklin County High School, the night featuring a pair of quarterfinal games — Franklin County vs. Greensburg, and Lawrenceburg vs. Batesville.

Neither of those games reached a conclusion.

With clouds gathering, the Lady Wildcats and Lady Pirates turned the tournament opener into a classic pitcher’s duel, as Kamryn McCool and Rose Morrison took turns, leaving opponents in the batter’s box scratching their heads.

Through six innings, the two hurlers spun their gems. McCool surrendered the only two hits of the game, harmless singles in the first and third innings. The FC pitcher also registered 10 strikeouts, her final one to Taylor Cooney.

Mother Nature then delivered her pitch.

A lightning flash, with Greensburg bringing its second batter to the plate in the sixth, forced stoppage of the game. Heavy rains followed, and both quarterfinals were postponed until Tuesday night.

Fortunately for the Franklin County sectional, Tuesday was scheduled as a night off, anyway. So the remainder of the tournament has not been affected ... yet. More storms were called for on Tuesday evening.

The Class 2A Sectional 41 tournament, hosted by Union County, wasn’t so lucky.

Only one game was scheduled on Monday night, Winchester set to play Centerville in the tourney’s lone quarterfinal contest.

That game was washed out mid-sentence, as well.

In that case, however, Tuesday was not an open day, as both semifinals were scheduled to take place.

With the remainder of the Winchester and Centerville game set to reach its conclusion on Tuesday (no results available), both semifinal tilts were moved to Wednesday. That adjustment, in turn, forced organizers to push the championship game, originally set for Wednesday, to Thursday night.

It’s a dance that athletic directors have grown accustomed to, from one Indiana spring to the next. But some have said that the weather uncertainty the past two months have placed the 2018 spring campaign in a class all its own.

There was some good news in the area on Monday, as the Class 3A Sectional 27 tournament in New Palestine was able to get its lone quarterfinal game in the books, Beech Grove defeating Rushville, 8-7.

That set up two semifinal contests on Tuesday, one between the host Lady Dragons and Connersville, and the other pitting Indian Creek against Beech Grove.

The winners of those two games (results not available at press time) will face one another tonight for the sectional championship. That game is set for a 6 p.m. start.

If the weather allows, of course.
