The last time the Connersville Middle School softball team squared off with the Franklin County ‘A’ team, the Lady Wildcats handed the CMS one of its three losses on the season, winning a 5-4 decision.

Wednesday evening on the Connersville High School Field, it took the Lady Spartans one inning to show that there would not be a repeat.

Scoring 10 times in the first inning, Connersville earned a lopsided 14-1 victory.

In the second game, facing the ‘B’ team, the Spartan girls wound up with another one-sided final, the locals winning 13-3.

Both games lasted only five innings, due to the 10-run rule.

“These were two very good wins by our girls tonight,” Connersville head coach Dennis Ellis said afterward.

In the opener, Kerstin Ellis led off the game getting hit by a pitch, and she was followed by a walk to Shelby Wolski.

Tori Hanson was next, and she cleared the bases with a home run, one of two through the two games for the CMS centerfielder.

That was the beginning of a scoring binge for the Spartans. Following a ground out, five straight batters, Lakyah Scott, Kendra Boyd, Katie Fisher, Abby Badore and Sydney Grounds, would all reach and circle the basepaths, putting runs on the board for Connersville.

Ellis and Wolski would both add second runs in the inning, Hanson again sending them home, this time with a triple.

“Last time we played them, they used Makayla Ferman, and she throws the ball really hard,” coach Ellis said. “We had only a couple of girls that was able to catch up with her, so it was a challenge scoring runs. This time, they started with a different pitcher, and we scored 10 runs in the first inning.

“They wound up bringing Makayla back into the game, and once they did that, we managed only four runs.”

Connersville would add two more tallies in the second, then close out the scoring with a pair of tallies in the fourth.

FC managed its lone tally in the top of the fourth, Brooklyn Hampson reaching on a lead-off single, then moving around the bases, scoring three batters later on an RBI-single by K.K. Ferman.

On the mound, Wolski picked up the victory for CMS.

In the second contest, facing the ‘B’ team, Franklin County jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first.

Connersville answered, however, as Ellis reached with a walk, and Wolski powered her to the plate with a home run.

The Lady Spartans added five runs in the second inning, and never looked back, earning the 10-run win.

Wolski scored four times in Game 2, giving her six runs through the two games.

Hanson had a great day at the plate, adding two triples and a double to her two round-trippers.

Still, coach Ellis said that he’s looking for more at the plate from his charges.

“Right now, we’re about 50-50 at the plate,” he said. “Half of us are hitting the ball, and the other half is struggling a little bit. The girls that are hitting the ball are carrying us right now.

“I want to see the girls that aren’t hitting get a few more at-bats, and want to be in the batter’s box.”

The two wins lifts Connersville to 9-3 on the season.
