Indiana Federation of Business & Professional Women Clubs, Connersville Local Organization, met April 17 at the Hot Pot.

Members present were President Pat Burgess, Vice President Mary Richardson, Treasurer Connie Robb and Geri Gilson, Ann Ekstrom, Jean Risch and Carrie Pfeiffer.

Pat called the meeting to order with the Pledge of the Allegiance and Club Collect.

Carrie read the minutes of the last meeting submitted by Pam Rader via email. Members approved.

Connie Robb gave the treasurer’s report. Mary proposed paying the scholarship from the gaming account. The motion was approved by all members.

Connie reported we had excellent candidates for the scholarship and it was hard to pick just one. A $500 scholarship was to be given from our club on May 2 to a deserving high school senior. Connie was to present the scholarship.

Pat reported that she sent a thank-you note to Dr. Shirkey for the donation to our scholarship fund.

Mary and Jean reported on the state convention held April 13-15 in Zionsville. Fantastic workshops were attended: one on pain management and one on parliamentarian procedure. Mary brought back information for the president and treasurer. We will need to change by-laws reflecting the decision to hold meetings only five times per year. Rita will be asked to draft a change including roles of the hostess and present it at the next meeting.

The 2018 Fall Conference will be at the Airport Hotel. The 2019 Spring Conference will be at the Brown County Inn. Mary read ideas for membership drive that she got from state convention.

The Reality Store was scheduled May 8 at Connersville Middle School. Members signed up to work. Carrie Pfeiffer will chair this event and reported that new volunteers were on board this year. One new addition will be lunch provided by CMS.

Current officers were elected to retain their offices. Installation will be in May.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Hot Pot. Dinner is at 6:15 p.m.

Rotary Club

Connersville Rotary Club met May 7 at First Presbyterian Church. The club heard from Ed Herrell, a volunteer of four years with the Whitewater Valley Railroad. He is passionate about the railroad.

Ed is encouraged about the 19 miles of track and all the volunteers involved. He mentioned the need for younger volunteers. Ed noted all the trips available through out the year: the popular Thomas the Tank Engine and The Polar Express and the Twilight Limited Train to Dinner, to name a few.

The club meets at noon Mondays. Guests are always welcome.

Fayette Garden Club

Members and friends of the Fayette Garden Club were busy Wednesday, planting 17 downtown planters, the Circle at Clio Fountain and Miller Garden.

Plants were purchased from McDivitt Farms through a grant from the Fayette County Foundation. Sharon McQueen, executive director of Discover Connersville, and also a Garden Club member, is working with downtown businesses and adjacent property owners in hopes of getting them to adopt a planter to water and care for during the growing season.

The Miller Garden in Roberts Park is used extensively in the spring for prom, graduation and wedding pictures. Thanks to all who helped make these endeavors possible.
