LIBERTY — Looking to hand the Union County boys golf team its first loss of the season, the Connersville squad ran into a lot of hills on Tuesday evening.

Playing a dual against the rival Patriots, CHS played the up-and-down Liberty Country Club course and came away with a 173-197 loss.

"The conditions were a little different than what the kids are used to, particularly the difference in the course," Connersville head coach J.J. Huber said. "Liberty is a little tighter, a bit tougher when hitting out of the rough, and there are definitely more hills, that what we have at Willowbrook.

"That made things a little more difficult that normal."

In addition to some of the struggles from his charges — "I saw a little bit of a struggle with their tee shots, which is not normal for them," Huber noted — the CHS coach added that he witnessed some positives, in spite of the 24-stroke defeat.

"I saw some really good chips and some really solid putts, which is awesome," he said. "This is our first loss in a couple of weeks, so we've been playing really well as of late.

"Over all, it's been a great season to this point."

Union County's Cody Peters wound up as low-medalist on the day, finishing with a four-over-par score of 39. It was the second straight meet the UC No. 1 finished with that score.

"I was really proud of Cody shooting a 39," Union County head coach Tony Gulley said. "There were points where the kids ran into a little trouble today, but Cody remained consistent throughout his round."

Peters scored a pair of birdies in the nine-hole effort, carding the gems on holes 1 and 9.

Connersville (6-3) was led by Dalton Lee and Adam Kelly, both linksters finishing with scores of 48. Jonah Graham followed with a 49.

"We had three scores in the 40s and two scores in the low-50s, so scoring was not terrible today," Huber said.

Ryan Scott (52) and Ryan McIntyre (53) rounded out CHS' scoring.

For UC, Peters was followed by Cameron Woods (43), Zeb Hall (45), Luke Yamashiro (46) and Tyler Osborne (48).

As a group, the Patriots finished with 15 pars, led by Yamashiro and Hall with four each.

"I just want the kids to remain consistent on the course," Gulley said. "Today, I thought the boys did really well doing that, so I am pleased. That's what I am aiming for, that the kids remain consistent."

Gulley was particularly pleased with Hall's effort on Tuesday.

"This was the best score for him, so I am really proud of his effort today," he said.

Both teams had a pair of junior varsity golfers on the course, as Connersville sent out Hutton Getz and Breydan Shafer, and Union County received scores from Blake Williams and Mason Powers.

The win lifted the Patriots to 9-0 on the season. UC is 6-0 against teams from the Tri-Eastern Conference, but the Pats will be challenged tonight when they host Hagerstown, which is also unbeaten.

"It's a little intimidating going up against a team like Union County, golfers who can strike it right down the middle of the fairway the way they do," Huber said. "That definitely has an effect on the way that you're going to play.

"That said, this was a great experience to be on this course tonight, and be in that situation against this team."
